DOST-Northern Samar Reports its Interventions for GIDA and ELCAC Barangays

DOST-8 through the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) – Northern Samar participated in the Poverty Reduction, Livelihood and Employment Cluster (PRLEC) Meeting held at TESDA Northern Samar Provincial Office on January 27, 2022. The different interventions of DOST-Northern Samar for Barangay Development Program (BDP) were presented to the priority barangays of Brgy. Calantiao, Bobon and Brgy. Quezon, Catarman which are identified as Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) and priority for program End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC). 

With the continued government efforts that are primarily aimed to empower the two (2) identified barangays with other NGAs, DOST infuses interventions through human resource development, health and nutrition, disaster risk reduction management, environmental protection and conservation, and livelihood through Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST). DOST-8 aims to provide water purification system as one of the interventions for health and nutrition particularly to solve problem on safe drinking water and help solve prevalence of water borne diseases reported in the barangays. 
The establishment of an Impeller Rice Mill will provide accessible post-harvest processing facility and eliminate the added transport costs currently incurred by small rice farmers. While the provision of Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS) aims to make available S&T Information towards human resource development. All these interventions are components of the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) P1M project titled “Science and Technology Interventions to Empower Marginalized Communities in Selected Barangays of Catarman and Bobon, Northern Samar
